Salmon flies tied on double hooks are now favoured by many salmon fisherman. They are a must have in locations where trebles are discouraged or disallowed and provide an added level of confidence over single hooks.

    Black Doubles - Salmon Flies:

These are the most widely used standard salmon fly hooks and are appropriate for almost all conditions. Typically our range of hooks are tied on VMC hooks which are more than adequate for almost all Atlantic Salmon fishing.

Silver & Gold Doubles - Salmon Flies:

Salmon doubles tied on silver and gold hooks give a totally different character and appearance to both standard fly patterns as well as giving birth to a great many new styles of fishing flies.

    Partridge Doubles - Salmon Flies:

Our salmon flies tied on Partridge doubles are ideally suited for locations where you can expect a significantly heavier average size of fish. For Norway and the Northern Rivers of Russia’s Kola Peninsula flies tied on these hooks should be mandatory!

    Loop Doubles:

More commonly associated with tube hooks Loop doubles are very strong and robust. They are perfectly suited to destinations such as Norway & Russia where powerful rivers and large salmon are the norm.

    Salar Doubles:

Salar salmon double hooks were designed by Swedish angler Mikael Frodin for the discerning fly tier and angler. The hook has a unique tapered eye and an incurved point. Silver, black and gold hooks make a good salmon fly look excellent and our excellent salmon flies look sublime. We will be offering a increased range of our premium flies on these hooks which are suitable for Salmon fishing in all destinations.

  • Trebles

For many treble hooks are the only hook that provides anglers with the confidence needed to catch an Atlantic Salmon. Shadow flies carries a good-sized range of trebles tied on black, gold and silver hooks.

For Icelandic patterns, where micro-trebles are very popular, we have a select number of patterns tied on straight eye silver and gold trebles.

  • Dry Flies

Fly Fishing for Atlantic Salmon with dry flies is a technique practiced with enormous success in Canada, Newfoundland and Russia. There are two primary techniques that are used. In Canada & Newfoundland the most popular and effective method is to dead drift the fly whilst in Russia skating the fly (riffling hitch method) is the favourite of fishing this fly. The salmon ‘take’ makes this one of the most rewarding and exciting forms of salmon fishing that you can experience. On a dead drifted fly the take is more often than not as gentle as that of a Trout. Skating the fly produces a completely different and typically much more aggressive reaction. Either way…watching a leviathan emerge out of the deep and take your fly is a unforgettable experience.

  • Tubes
  • Conehead Tubes

The addition of a Conehead to even some fairly standard salmon fly patterns can transform them, both in the eyes of the angler and the fish! Our range of Conehead tubes, produced by Shadow Flies, are made using a multitude of different sized cones to ensure that the flies are perfectly balanced and in proportion to the size of the fly. We use standard brass Cones as well as tungsten coneheads and where the fly patterns require it they are professionally sprayed in the factory to ensure the end products are close to perfect. Increasingly popular conehead salmon fly patterns are a must have in any salmon anglers fly box. Made from either brass or tungsten and in a wide range of colours from metallic nickel or silver to fire red they are proven killers.

  • Templedog Tubes

The Temple Dog series of flies have become one of the most successful early season / high water salmon flies available. Originally designed and tied by Swedish fly-tier Hakan Norling Temple Dog flies were designed to create a salmon fly with substantial body, size and importantly action. The larger versions are by far and away the most popular ‘must have’ flies for fishing early season in Scandinavian and Russian Rivers.

  • Loop Flies

Loop Tackle has been synonymous with cutting edge design, innovation and quality, ranging form large arbour reels to the their benchmark ultra strong Loop double hooks. United Kingdom/Scotland:

British rivers were the birthplace of ‘sport’ fishing with an artificial fly for Atlantic Salmon and saw the creation of some of the most detailed and intricate patterns imaginable. Modern salmon patterns for the British Isles are an amalgamation of traditional and modern designs influenced by tiers from home and abroad. Do not be afraid to try something a little out of the ordinary. Hitched or micro flies have as much a place during the low-water summer months as they do in Iceland.

    Russia:

Our Russian collections are primarily based around the rivers of the Northern Kola Peninsula such as the Kharlovka, Litza, Rynda, Kola, Yokanga and Varzina where large fish and tough conditions require flies tied on very strong Partridge & Loop hooks. This is not a pre-requisite for the Ponoi, Varzuga, Kitza or Umba rivers however many of the patterns are similar.

    Norway:

Norwegian Rivers are typically ‘Big Fish’ rivers. Although Norway may not be as prolific as some other destinations they make up for this in the size of the Salmon and strong hooks are a pre-requisite regardless of the time of the year you visit. During the spring weeks of early June large flies are the order of the day and our collection of Temple Dog salmon flies in particular are unbeatable.

    Iceland:

Iceland is one of the most prolific Atlantic Salmon countries anglers fishing in Iceland need to come prepared for the crystal clear water conditions. Micro salmon flies tied on tiny trebles and tubes as well as extensive use of hitched tubes are essential. Salar Flies has extensive collections of the best Icelandic fly patterns you will find.

    British Columbia:

British Columbia is the home of a great many of the world’s most ardent anglers, and with good reason. The fishing for pacific salmon is exceptional but maybe more significantly it is Steelhead that attract the greatest devotees, and this has led to the development of not only some very original and distinct Steelhead fly patterns.

Our selection of Steelhead flies will turn the eye of even the most experienced Steelhead guides and anglers. For more information on the fishing and the wonderful angling opportunities in British Columbia you can obtain information and advice from WhereWiseMenFish

    Ireland:

Like many countries Irish salmon flies have developed in their own special way and families of patterns such as the Irish Shrimp Flies are the ‘ghillies choice’. For 2011 Salar Flies will have a comprehensive range or Irish patterns.
