Although she was never a fly-fisher she was taught the art of tying flies when she was only twelve years old by Bob Trussler. She has gone on to become one of the top fly tyers in the world. A very popular fly in late 70’s and early 80’s, but nowadays has a small but dedicated following of fly fishermen. Works well in midsummer and bright conditions.

The design of this salmon fly was based around two concepts. The first was to tie a fly that resembled a returning eel parr from the Sargasso Sea. The second was to produce a fly for some conservative American friends who declined to use tube flies, so he wanted to design a fly pattern that resembled a tube fly without actually being one. His friend Joseph Hubert on seeing the fly (back in 1977) declared that it was like a ‘black sheep’ in the company of all other classic salmon flies and the name stuck! Black Sheep has become a international fly, used widely from shores of Canada to the Russian Tundra. Tied in multitude of variations and sizes, from 2” copper tubes, down to #18 trebles. A very good all round fly, that catches fish from early spring to late autumn. The Dee Sheep is a variation, and has become a hugely popular in UK in recent years.

It has proved to be phenomenally successful. Available in any number colors; red and black being the most common, to white, blue, olive and orange; and of variations from micro trebles to depth-plumbing cone tubes this is a hugely successful salmon fly. The Frances arrived in earnest to UK in the early 90’s with fishermen who had traveled to Iceland. It was a very successful fly in Helmsdale River and is now somewhat of a standard fly for many UK salmon anglers.

It’s one of the most popular flies around; generally tied on doubles or trebles, though single hooks are more popular in North America. The Undertaker is considered an all-rounder fly, though it is probably most popular in summer and autumn. The Green and Red butt creates a very stark contrast to the rest of the darker colored fly, creating what many call a strike point.

We are not suggesting that this is the only fly you take however if you were to take just one fly then this should be it! The slightly thinner design than on a regular Snaelda means that it creates less resistance and can fish better, deeper quicker.

Early Season on the Northern Rivers will mean that you will want to be fishing deep and as a result you will stand a good chance of loosing more than your fair share of flies however this is a small price to pay for what is likely to be the opportunity of the biggest silver salmon of your life.
